First, a short introduction to The SAMURAI OF PROG…
This multinational ensemble was formed around 2009 as a project lead by Finland-based, Italian composer and bassist Marco Bernard. Marco has been active in the Finnish association for Progressive Music since 1995, and had been involved in their Colossus Magazine since 1996. He was also instrumental in the ‘Colossus’ series of themed albums created in cooperation with French label: Musea. It was for a contribution to one of those projects that SAMURAI OF PROG was born, and joining Bernard as permanent members were USA multi-instrumentalist: Steve Unruh and Finnish drummer: Kimmo Pörsti. Besides this core trio, the philosophy of this band appeared to be to involve additional musicians as needed and wanted, and their 2011 debut effort: ‘Undercover’ bore testimony to that line of thinking, with a list of guest appearances impressive in length, scope as well as quality.
A 2nd album based on similar philosophy came along in 2013. Entitled: ‘Secret Of Disguise’ was a double album and that lead on to the release of: ‘Imperial Hotel’, the epic 2014 studio production which featured members of: ENGLAND (UK), GLASS HAMMER (USA), KENSO (Japan), ANGLAGARD (Sweden) and GENESIS tribute act The MUSICAL BOX (Canada)!
After that came ‘Lost & Found’ in 2016, ‘On We Sail’ in 2017, and now in 2018 we have: ‘Archiviarum’.
‘Archiviarum’ is a collection of special recordings that The SAMURAI OF PROG has made throughout the years.
Made up of Four Brand New tracks, some Previously Unreleased pieces, Two Covers and material from Related Projects that TSOP have been involved with.
All the tracks have been given new treatments; they all have new mixes, in some cases new arrangements and none have ever appeared on a TSOP album before!
This isn’t a typical TSOP album, so it shouldn’t be compared directly to their previous releases. But all in all, these tracks deserve to be assembled into a proper album.
So, with a generous portion of love, care and the kitchen sink being thrown in to make all of these tracks shine, the band were happily surprised to find that despite its piecemeal origins, ‘Archiviarum’ grew into a cohesive listening experience!
Musicians taking part are core members: Marco Bernard (Rickenbacker bass / project manager), Kimmo Pörsti (drums / percussion / audio engineer) and Steve Unruh (vocals / violin / flute / guitar), with (on various tracks) guest from around the world such as: Octavio Stampalia (keyboards), Brent Kull (electric guitar), Eduardo Garcia (keyboards), Ruben Alvarez (acoustic / electric guitars), Lalo Huber (keyboards), Carlos Lucena (electric guitar), Michelle Young (vocals), Michele Mutti (keyboards), Stefano "Lupo" Galifi (vocals), Oliviero Lacagnina (keyboards), Lalo Huber (NEXUS - keyboards), Kerry Shackett (keyboards / guitar), Srdjan Brankovic (electric guitars), Stefano Vicarelli (keyboards), Marek Arnold (keyboards / sax), Fran Turner (electric guitar), Danny Lopresto (electric guitar) and Mark Trueack (lead & backing vocals)
Like the three previous releases, this too comes in a lavish physical package made up of a Triple Gate-Fold Card Sleeve with 20-Page Full-Colour Booklet and an inner Picture Card Sleeve.
‘Archiviarum’ was released on 30th January 2018.
